Uganda’s Telecom Sector Tackles Carbon Footprint for a Greener Future

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) is taking bold steps to make the country’s telecommunications sector more environmentally friendly.

Recently, the UCC’s ICT & Research Department held a validation workshop to review the carbon and energy footprint of Uganda’s telecom networks.

The workshop brought together key stakeholders to discuss and refine the findings of a study conducted by a consultancy team from CEDAT–Makerere University, led by Dr. Abubaker Wasswa (PhD).

The study looked at energy use across telecom networks, data centers, and supporting infrastructure, highlighting the sector’s carbon emissions and environmental impact.

With Uganda’s communications networks growing rapidly, understanding these effects is critical. During the workshop, stakeholders explored practical solutions to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions, aiming for a more sustainable telecom industry.

The results of the study will provide a solid foundation for UCC to shape future regulations. By understanding the sector’s energy needs and environmental impact, UCC hopes to encourage green technologies, promote sustainable practices, and support the growth of a modern, eco-friendly communications infrastructure. This initiative shows Uganda’s commitment to balancing technological progress with environmental responsibility.
