Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has announced a major boost to school infrastructure in the 2024/2025 financial year, with plans to construct more than 20 new classrooms as part of efforts to build a smarter, more inclusive city. The commitment was unveiled during a press briefing at City Hall, where Executive Director Dorothy Kisaka outlined how education remains a central pillar of the Smart City Agenda, alongside technology, infrastructure development, and the overall well-being of city residents.Kampala currently has 79 government-aided primary schools and 22 government-aided secondary schools under KCCA, all providing free universal education in line with national policy, placing significant demand on learning facilities across the city.Over the 2023/2024 financial year, KCCA made notable strides in improving school environments, with more than 30 schools benefiting from renovations, new classroom blocks, and general infrastructure upgrades aimed at easing congestion and improving safety. The Authority also secured 1.685 acres of land for Kasubi Family Primary School, a move intended to create space for expansion and long-term development of the school’s facilities. To improve day-to-day learning conditions, KCCA distributed 150 desks to 10 schools and completed major works at Kololo Secondary School, including asbestos removal, remodeling, and expansion of classroom and laboratory blocks.Looking ahead, Kisaka revealed that Nakivubo Primary School will receive a nine-classroom block, Mpererwe Primary School will get a six-classroom block, while Kasubi Family Primary School will benefit from a new nine-classroom block and perimeter fencing to enhance security.Beyond primary education, KCCA plans to construct a seed secondary school in Kawempe Division and carry out extensive renovations at Kyambogo College School, reinforcing the Authority’s broader goal of using education-driven infrastructure to shape a safer, smarter, and more prosperous Kampala.
