UEDCL Leads Campaign Against Bush Burning to Protect Power in Kitgum

Share This:

In Kitgum and the wider Northern Region, uncontrolled bush burning has become a serious threat to both electricity supply and community safety. The fires continue to destroy electricity poles and other critical infrastructure, causing prolonged power outages that disrupt homes, businesses, and essential services. Beyond these disruptions, bush burning has escalated insecurity, destroyed property, and, in some tragic cases, led to loss of life.

The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) is taking strong action to address this growing concern. Recently, UEDCL convened a high-level engagement with political and local leaders in Kitgum to discuss strategies to curb bush burning and protect electricity infrastructure. The meeting highlighted the urgent need for coordinated community efforts to prevent fires and safeguard power supply.

UEDCL has also partnered with the Fourth Estate to raise public awareness about the dangers of bush burning. Through press briefings and community campaigns, the organization is encouraging people to take collective responsibility for protecting electricity infrastructure. Leaders and residents alike are urged to report uncontrolled fires promptly and follow safety guidelines to reduce the risk of damage.
The message from UEDCL is clear: bush burning is more than a fire hazard—it is a threat to energy security, property, and lives. By working together, communities can help ensure reliable electricity, protect homes and businesses, and prevent avoidable tragedies caused by uncontrolled fires.
