Leaders in Lira City and surrounding districts have raised serious concerns over the growing impact of bush burning, warning that it now poses a major threat to essential social services. During a strategic crisis management meeting that brought together key stakeholders, participants emphasized the urgent need for coordinated action to curb this destructive practice.
Uncontrolled bush fires have repeatedly destroyed electricity poles and distribution lines, leading to frequent power outages. These outages directly affect critical institutions, especially health facilities, which depend on stable electricity to operate diagnostic equipment, preserve vaccines, run maternity services, and respond to emergencies. The disruption of power not only hinders service delivery but also places lives at risk.
Schools and water supply systems in Lira and the surrounding districts are also heavily affected. Power interruptions disrupt learning programs, limit access to computer laboratories, and halt study activities. Electrically powered water pumps fail during outages, threatening access to safe and clean water for households and public institutions alike. Businesses and households continue to face major inconveniences, showing the wide-ranging consequences of uncontrolled fires.
The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has been at the forefront of addressing this challenge. In partnership with the Fourth Estate, UEDCL has organized press briefings and community campaigns to educate the public about the dangers of bush burning. High-level engagements have been held with political and local leaders in Kitgum, Lira, and other districts, urging communities to take collective responsibility in protecting electricity infrastructure.
Beyond infrastructure damage, bush burning has become a broader public safety and development concern. It slows economic activity, increases community vulnerability, and, in some tragic cases, leads to the loss of life. UEDCL and local leaders are calling on everyone to prevent bush fires, report uncontrolled fires promptly, and follow safety guidelines to protect electricity, water, schools, and essential services.
The message is clear: bush burning is more than a fire hazard—it threatens energy security, health, education, and community well-being. Sustained awareness and collective action are critical to keeping electricity reliable, water flowing, schools open, and communities safe in Lira and beyond.
