Lawmakers are preparing for a pivotal parliamentary sitting this Wednesday as the government moves to introduce a fresh package of tax amendment bills. The session, part of the ongoing fifth sitting of the third meeting in the fifth session of the 11th Parliament, is expected to shape the country’s fiscal direction in the months ahead.

Leading the charge will be the Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, who is scheduled to present nine proposed amendments for their first reading. The move reflects a broader strategy to adjust tax policies in response to evolving economic demands and revenue needs.

Among the major proposals is the Excise Duty (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which could bring changes to levies on various goods and services. Such revisions often influence market prices and consumer behavior, making this bill one to watch closely.

Equally significant is the Value Added Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2026, alongside the Income Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2026. These measures are expected to have widespread implications, potentially affecting businesses, employees, and investors across different sectors of the economy.

The government will also introduce the Tax Procedures Code (Amendment) Bill, 2026, aimed at refining how taxes are administered. Adjustments under this bill may impact compliance systems, enforcement mechanisms, and the overall efficiency of tax collection.

Further changes are proposed in areas such as lotteries and gaming, external trade, and stamp duty. These sectors contribute notably to national revenue, and any legislative updates could alter operational frameworks and financial obligations within them.
In addition to the tax-focused agenda, Parliament will receive the Annual Budget Estimates for the 2026/27 financial year. This document will outline projected government spending and provide insight into national priorities for the upcoming fiscal period.

The session will also address a request to write off outstanding non-tax revenue owed by Kilembe Mines Limited. With both policy reforms and financial decisions on the table, the day’s proceedings are poised to play a critical role in steering the country’s economic future.
