A powerful shift in focus toward Africa’s collective future is unfolding at the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Leaders’ Retreat in Kyankwanzi, where discussions are centering on regional integration, governance transformation, and the continent’s positioning in an evolving global order.
The high-level meeting at the National Leadership Institute (NALI) has brought together senior leaders and policymakers determined to craft a unified path that strengthens Africa’s competitiveness and resilience amid growing global uncertainties.
Yoweri Museveni used the platform to emphasize that Africa’s progress depends on deeper unity, urging leaders to embrace economic cooperation, integration, and self-reliance as the foundation for sustainable development.
He maintained that without a shared vision and coordinated policies, the continent risks missing out on opportunities presented by the changing dynamics of global power.
A key voice at the retreat, Hassan Omar Hassan, delivered a strong message on the urgency of integration, describing it as a critical step toward unlocking Africa’s full economic potential.
He pointed to fragmented markets and policy inconsistencies as major barriers, calling for harmonised systems, expanded intra-African trade, and increased investment in infrastructure to drive growth.
Omar also challenged political leaders to take decisive action by enacting laws that promote accountability, strengthen governance institutions, and ensure that development efforts directly benefit citizens.
Adding to the discussion, Lucy Nakyobe highlighted the importance of improving efficiency within government systems, stressing that tackling corruption remains essential to restoring public confidence.
In support of the proposals, Thomas Tayebwa expressed confidence that the retreat’s outcomes could lead to stronger governance, enhanced stability, and a more prosperous future for Uganda and the wider region.
