The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) recently hosted its first-ever Community of Practice on Risk Management, a groundbreaking event aimed at fostering resilience and strengthening collaboration across institutions. Held in Kampala, the two-day forum brought together risk management professionals from various sectors to discuss how to integrate effective risk management strategies into organizational practices.

The theme of the forum, “Building a Resilient Revenue Authority,” focused on creating sustainable practices that help institutions adapt to and manage risks in an increasingly complex environment. Organized in partnership with the Institute of Risk Management (IRM) and the Certified Risk Management Professionals (CRMP), the event featured a variety of expert panels, roundtable discussions, and breakout sessions.

Joyce Ndirangu, the Director of IRM Africa, delivered a powerful message in her keynote address, urging institutions to rethink their approach to risk. She emphasized that the future of institutions like URA will be shaped not just by compliance, but by how well risks are understood and managed. “Risk management is no longer a support function; it is a leadership responsibility,” she said, highlighting the need for proactive leadership in risk handling.

Emmanuel Bichetero Asiimwe, the Assistant Commissioner of Programs Management at the Tax Academy, also stressed the importance of the event. He described the Community of Practice as timely and vital, noting that effective enterprise risk management is crucial for achieving institutional goals and ensuring long-term sustainability. The forum, he added, serves as a platform for connecting professionals, sharing knowledge, and applying best practices in risk management across different operations.

The discussions during the forum were insightful and practical, with Day One focusing on “Risk Maturity & Strategic Execution: From Boardroom to Operations,” while Day Two explored the growing importance of Digital Risk and Collaborative Resilience in today’s interconnected world. These sessions offered valuable insights on how organizations can embed risk management into their strategies and operations, aligning theory with real-world application.

A key highlight of the event was the official launch of the Risk Management Community of Practice, a collaborative network designed to promote continuous learning and professional development in the field of risk management. The event also marked the beginning of a new partnership between the URA Tax Academy and CRMP, aimed at promoting ongoing education and fostering a community of risk management professionals.

Through initiatives like this, the URA is demonstrating its commitment to building a resilient and forward-thinking organization, capable of navigating the challenges of the future. The forum was not just a gathering of experts, but a call to action for all institutions to elevate their risk management practices and ensure their long-term success.

The success of the inaugural Risk Management Forum sets a strong foundation for future engagements and highlights URA’s role as a leader in promoting resilience and collaboration across Uganda’s institutions.
