Uganda’s National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB) has secured the prestigious ISO/IEC 27001:2022 Information Security Management certification, marking a major achievement in its efforts to strengthen data protection and modernize oversight of the country’s rapidly growing gaming industry. The internationally recognized certification was formally handed over to the Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Henry Musasizi, during the unveiling of the Board’s new five-year Strategic Plan, Client Charter, and Service Delivery Standards. The milestone highlights the regulator’s commitment to safeguarding sensitive information and improving service delivery.
According to NLGRB Chief Executive Officer Denis Ngabirano, the certification followed an intensive eight-month evaluation process that assessed the Board’s information security systems and operational procedures. He noted that the recognition places the institution among organizations that meet globally accepted standards for managing and protecting data.Ngabirano explained that digital technology has become a key pillar in regulating Uganda’s gaming sector. Through automated monitoring systems, the Board has enhanced supervision of betting firms and casinos, improved compliance levels, and strengthened mechanisms that support government revenue collection.
He also disclosed that the regulator is engaging government to secure stronger legal backing that would enable it to deal more effectively with illegal gaming operators. Among the issues raised are tougher penalties for offenders, increased funding, and additional staffing to improve enforcement activities across the country.NLGRB Board Chairperson Kenneth Kitariko described the certification as a significant step forward in the institution’s transformation agenda. He emphasized that the Board will continue embracing innovation and technology-driven solutions to build a transparent, fair, and efficient gaming environment that supports Uganda’s development goals.
Finance Minister Musasizi praised the regulator for the achievement, noting that the gaming industry has become a valuable contributor to the national economy. He said the sector currently generates an estimated Shs360 billion annually for government while creating employment opportunities, supporting businesses, and expanding the country’s tax base.Musasizi further challenged the Board to strengthen electronic monitoring systems, accelerate automation of licensing services, intensify action against illegal gambling activities, and promote responsible gaming. He said the newly launched strategic framework will play a crucial role in advancing accountability, digital transformation, revenue mobilization, and sustainable socio-economic growth over the next five years.
