Uganda Airlines has entered a new chapter in its growth strategy after signing a landmark agreement with American aircraft manufacturer Boeing for the purchase of eight brand-new passenger jets. The deal, announced during the Farnborough International Airshow in the United Kingdom, marks the first time the national carrier has placed a direct aircraft order with Boeing, signaling its ambition to expand operations and strengthen Uganda’s aviation sector. The order includes four Boeing 737-8 aircraft and four Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, a combination expected to significantly boost the airline’s regional and long-haul capabilities.

The acquisition forms part of a broader plan to increase capacity, open new routes and position Entebbe International Airport as a major aviation gateway for East and Central Africa.Uganda Airlines Chief Executive Officer Ato Girma Wake described the agreement as a transformative moment for the carrier. He said the new aircraft will enhance connectivity between Uganda and key destinations across Africa, while also supporting expansion into international markets in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The Boeing 737-8 jets are designed for medium-haul operations and can accommodate between 160 and 180 passengers. Their range allows them to efficiently serve destinations across Africa as well as selected routes in the Gulf region and South Asia, giving Uganda Airlines greater flexibility in network planning. For long-distance travel, the airline will rely on the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, an aircraft renowned for its fuel efficiency and extended range.

With the capability to fly more than 15,000 kilometres without stopping, the Dreamliner is expected to play a key role in connecting Uganda directly to major global cities and reducing dependence on transit hubs.Boeing welcomed the partnership, noting that the aircraft selected by Uganda Airlines are among the most advanced in the company’s commercial fleet. Company officials said the jets will provide the airline with improved operational performance, lower fuel consumption and greater versatility as it expands its footprint in the competitive aviation market.Beyond acquiring aircraft, the agreement also includes long-term collaboration in areas such as technical support, training and skills development.

According to Wake, this aspect of the partnership is crucial for building local aviation expertise and ensuring the airline maintains high operational and safety standards as it grows.Since relaunching commercial operations in 2019, Uganda Airlines has steadily expanded its network to multiple destinations across Africa and beyond. The new Boeing order is expected to more than double the carrier’s fleet in the coming years, laying the foundation for stronger regional connectivity, increased tourism, enhanced cargo services and a bigger role for Uganda in global air transport.
