Stanbic Bank Uganda has strengthened maternal and newborn healthcare services at Kawempe National Referral Hospital after donating medical equipment worth UGX 65 million to support the facility’s efforts in saving mothers and babies’ lives. The donation is aimed at improving the quality of care and addressing some of the challenges faced by health workers at one of the country’s busiest maternity centres.
The support was delivered as part of Stanbic Bank’s annual L.O.V.E. Month activities held every October, where the bank celebrates customers while giving back to communities through impactful initiatives. Kawempe National Referral Hospital has remained one of the key beneficiaries of the bank’s community support programmes over the past four years.Located in Kampala’s Kawempe Division, the 200-bed hospital handles a high number of maternity cases and is among the busiest labour facilities in Africa.
The hospital delivers an average of about 80 babies every 24 hours and carries out more than 10 major operations daily, placing significant demand on its medical equipment and resources.Speaking during the handover ceremony, Kawempe National Referral Hospital Executive Director Dr. Byaruhanga Emmanuel Kayogoza appreciated Stanbic Bank for its continued commitment to supporting safe motherhood. He explained that while the hospital has highly skilled medical workers, access to modern equipment remains one of the biggest challenges affecting service delivery.Dr. Byaruhanga noted that specialised equipment such as breathing support machines, patient monitors and other medical tools are critical in handling emergencies involving newborns and mothers.
He said the donation will help health workers provide better care, especially for babies facing complications after birth. The donated equipment included radiant warmers, LED phototherapy machines with FLUX meters, five-parameter patient monitors, heavy-duty suction machines, ICU beds, infusion pumps, syringe pumps and heavy-duty wall-mounted oxygen flow meters. The items are expected to improve treatment, monitoring and emergency response within the hospital.
Stanbic Bank Executive Director and Head of Corporate and Investment Banking Paul Muganwa said the bank was encouraged by the positive impact of its previous interventions at the hospital. He highlighted that even small improvements, including creating privacy for patients, contribute to restoring dignity and improving healthcare experiences.Representing the KCCA Director of Public Health, Dr. Isaiah Chebrot praised Stanbic Bank for supporting government efforts in improving healthcare services. Stanbic Kawempe Branch Manager Patrick Semanda added that the partnership with the hospital reflects the bank’s commitment to transforming communities and contributing to Uganda’s growth through meaningful investments.
