Makerere University has once again proved why it remains Uganda’s most respected institution of higher learning after topping the July 2026 Webometrics rankings. The latest results also show Kampala International University (KIU) holding firmly onto its position as the country’s leading private university, reflecting its continued growth and strong academic presence. The global rankings place Makerere University at number one in Uganda and 925th worldwide.
KIU follows in second place nationally, earning the 2,041st position globally. Mbarara University of Science and Technology comes third, while Uganda Management Institute and Kyambogo University complete the list of Uganda’s top five universities.Makerere’s impressive performance is largely driven by its strong research culture, international academic influence and wide digital presence. Over the years, the university has built a reputation as one of Africa’s leading centres for higher education, producing graduates who have gone on to serve in key positions across the continent.KIU has also continued to strengthen its standing by remaining ahead of all other private universities in Uganda.
The institution has consistently performed well in recent Webometrics rankings, showing that it is becoming an increasingly competitive choice for students seeking quality higher education.Beyond its ranking, KIU is widening its international reach through strategic partnerships. On July 23, 2026, Vice Chancellor Prof. Muhammed Ngoma visited Ondokuz Mayıs University in Türkiye under the Erasmus+ Exchange Programme, an initiative that promotes academic exchanges and cooperation between universities across different countries.Prof. Ngoma said building global partnerships is essential for universities that want to remain competitive.
He explained that the Erasmus+ programme will create new opportunities for research, innovation, staff development and student exchanges while increasing the university’s international visibility. The Webometrics ranking system evaluates universities based on research impact, online visibility and the accessibility of academic knowledge. It recognises institutions that actively publish research and make valuable educational resources available through digital platforms rather than judging classroom teaching alone.
The latest rankings demonstrate that Uganda’s universities are becoming more competitive on the global stage. While Makerere continues to set the pace, KIU’s steady rise and expanding international collaborations show that private universities are increasingly making their mark both within Uganda and beyond.
