Equity Bank Uganda has reinforced its position as one of Africa’s leading financial institutions after receiving three prestigious awards for excellence in diaspora banking and cross-border financial services. The recognition was presented during the AIDO Network Pan-African Impact Awards held at Speke Resort Munyonyo as part of the Africa Liberation Week celebrations.

The bank was honoured for its outstanding contribution to cross-border remittances, diaspora banking solutions and diaspora investments, reflecting its continued efforts to provide innovative financial services for Ugandans and other Africans living abroad. The awards also acknowledge the bank’s growing influence in connecting the diaspora with investment opportunities back home. The recognition followed a voting process conducted by the AIDO Network, a global Pan-African organisation representing more than 70,000 members committed to promoting historical justice, economic empowerment and stronger ties between Africa and its diaspora.

The organisation praised Equity Bank Uganda for consistently delivering services that meet the financial needs of Africans across the world.According to Winfred Warui, Senior Manager for International Banking and Cross-Border Payments at Equity Bank Uganda, the awards are a reflection of the bank’s long-term investment in building financial products tailored for diaspora customers. She explained that the bank has shifted beyond simply facilitating remittances and now focuses on helping customers build wealth through secure savings and investment opportunities.Among the bank’s key products is the Equity Release facility, which allows diaspora customers to access up to 70 percent of the value of their property in Uganda without selling it. The funds can then be invested in businesses, land purchases, real estate developments and other income-generating projects, enabling customers to expand their investments while living abroad. The bank has also expanded access to government securities, including treasury bills and treasury bonds, giving customers reliable long-term investment options. In addition, its digital banking platform allows diaspora clients to monitor projects, pay suppliers, manage accounts and operate businesses remotely without relying on relatives or intermediaries.

To improve customer convenience, Equity Bank Uganda has strengthened its international banking services through Visa debit card integration, allowing customers to access their money from anywhere in the world. The bank also operates a dedicated diaspora relationship management team and a 24-hour contact centre to serve clients across different time zones, particularly in Europe and the Americas. With an estimated three million Ugandans living abroad, Equity Bank Uganda says it intends to expand its diaspora banking services through international outreach programmes, digital campaigns and strategic partnerships. The lender believes empowering the diaspora with secure financial solutions will not only support individual wealth creation but also contribute significantly to Uganda’s economic growth through increased investment and remittance flows.
