The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) has expanded its support for innovation by launching the 40th Technology and Innovation Support Centre (TISC) at Soroti University, strengthening efforts to promote research, creativity, and technology-driven solutions among young innovators. The newly established Soroti University Technology and Innovation Support Centre (SUN-TISC) is expected to provide students, researchers, and entrepreneurs with access to intellectual property services, technical information, mentorship, and resources needed to transform ideas into practical solutions.

The launch ceremony brought together key stakeholders from government, academia, and the innovation sector, including representatives from Makerere University Innovation and Incubation Centre and the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development.During the event, students showcased several technology-based projects designed to address real-life challenges through artificial intelligence and digital innovation. Among the projects were an AI-powered court speech transcription system, a smart timetable management tool, and a mobile commerce platform using electronic payments and QR code tracking.Other innovations displayed included a portable electricity access system, an offline artificial intelligence learning platform, a machine learning fruit sorting solution, and a smart Internet of Things (IoT) system aimed at improving agricultural storage and reducing losses.Representing the Registrar General, URSB Commissioner for Finance and Administration Ekaju Ambrose said Technology and Innovation Support Centres are more than training facilities, as they provide platforms where ideas can be protected, developed, and turned into opportunities that benefit society.

He explained that the establishment of more TISCs across Uganda reflects URSB’s commitment to decentralising intellectual property services and ensuring innovators outside major urban centres can access support for developing and commercialising their creations. The Soroti University centre is expected to become a major innovation hub in Eastern Uganda, encouraging students and researchers to develop solutions that contribute to economic growth, technological advancement, and national development.
