Uganda has achieved a significant continental victory after being chosen to host the headquarters of the African Union Humanitarian Agency, a move set to strengthen the country’s influence in humanitarian affairs, diplomacy and regional cooperation. The announcement was made by Minister of ICT and National Guidance Justine Kasule Lumumba during a briefing at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala, where she confirmed that the agency’s permanent base will be constructed in Lubowa.
According to the minister, the headquarters project will require an estimated investment of US$86 million and will be implemented in phases to ensure the successful establishment of the institution in Uganda. As part of the transition plan, the government will provide temporary office facilities in Rubaga where the agency’s technical staff will operate as preparations for the construction of the permanent headquarters continue.Lumumba said hosting the African Union Humanitarian Agency will place Uganda at the centre of Africa’s humanitarian coordination efforts while increasing the country’s visibility on the global stage. She noted that the institution is expected to attract international experts, diplomats, researchers and officials from across Africa and other parts of the world, creating new economic opportunities for Uganda.
The government projects that the headquarters will contribute to job creation, increased investment and growth in sectors that support international organisations and humanitarian operations. The move further cements Uganda’s position as a strategic hub for continental diplomacy, offering the country a greater role in shaping Africa’s humanitarian response and cooperation agenda.
