The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has commenced the retirement of 1,791 personnel under Batch 16 of its retirement programme, marking another major transition as long-serving members of the force leave active service.

The retirement exercise covers personnel serving in different formations and units across the country, with the process already underway, according to Acting Director of Defence Public Information Col Chris Magezi. The group being retired includes senior officers, junior officers and militants who have completed their service requirements and are now preparing to leave the active military establishment.Out of the 1,791 personnel, 205 are junior officers, while 1,364 are militants. Their retirement is being handled through their respective formations and units as the UPDF implements the latest phase of its retirement programme.Another 222 senior officers are also due to retire, with their official send-off ceremony scheduled for August 12, 2026, at the UPDF Joint Services Headquarters in Mbuya.

The ceremony will provide an opportunity for the military leadership to recognise and honour the senior officers for their years of service to the UPDF and the country.Col Magezi said the retirement exercise is part of the UPDF’s tradition of honouring personnel who have served the country with courage, discipline and dedication throughout their military careers. He noted that the retiring personnel have played various roles in protecting Uganda’s sovereignty and supporting the country’s security interests during their years in service.

The senior commanders, in particular, have contributed to the development of the UPDF and Uganda’s participation in regional peace and security efforts. The UPDF has also indicated that the retirement of the 19 general officers will be conducted separately, with the date and details of their official retirement ceremony to be communicated at a later stage. The retirement programme is considered an important part of maintaining a professional and effective military institution, allowing personnel who have completed their careers to exit honourably while creating room for new officers and soldiers to take on greater responsibilities.According to Magezi, the exercise demonstrates the UPDF’s commitment to recognising the contribution of its personnel while ensuring that the force continues to evolve in line with changing security needs. He said the retirement ceremonies are intended to reflect the institution’s respect for its personnel and its commitment to the values of patriotism, duty and honour.

The UPDF leadership has also emphasised that retirement does not erase the contribution made by the officers and soldiers during their years of service, noting that their experience remains part of the institution’s history. As Batch 16 personnel begin their transition from military service to civilian life, the UPDF is expected to continue with the retirement process across its formations and units. The August 12 ceremony in Mbuya will therefore serve as a major milestone in the retirement programme, particularly for the senior officers who will officially be recognised as they conclude their active military careers.
