The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) is today beginning a major retirement exercise that will see more than 1,500 personnel formally leave active military service across the country. The exercise includes over 220 senior officers who are scheduled to receive an official send-off at the UPDF Joint Services Headquarters in Mbuya. In addition to the senior officers, more than 200 junior officers and approximately 1,300 militants will retire from their respective formations and units.A separate farewell ceremony for 19 generals is also expected, although the UPDF has not yet announced the date. Among those set to retire is Minister of Public Service General Katumba Wamala.UPDF Deputy Spokesperson Colonel Chris Magezi said the exercise marks the 16th batch of personnel to undergo retirement under the army’s established arrangements. The military says the retirement programme is part of its tradition of recognising soldiers who have dedicated years of service to the country. The send-off activities will honour the retirees for their contribution, sacrifice and patriotism while marking their transition from active military duty. The large-scale retirement marks another important chapter in the UPDF’s institutional journey as the force continues to renew its ranks and prepare for the next generation of military personnel.
