The National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB) released 100 superior dairy breeding bulls to farmers belonging to dairy cooperatives across Uganda. The handover took place on October 17, 2023, at the NAGRC&DB headquarters in Entebbe as part of the agency’s routine breeding programme implemented through its 15 animal genetic resource centres across the country.NAGRC&DB is mandated to promote commercial animal breeding and improve livestock genetics and productivity in Uganda.
The agency produces and supplies quality breeding stock, including dairy and beef cattle, goats, pigs and poultry, as well as semen, embryos and fish fingerlings, at subsidized prices.NAGRC&DB also provides farmers with pasture and fodder planting materials and produces affordable animal feeds such as hay, silage and compounded feeds.Officials said the distribution of superior breeding stock is aimed at increasing livestock productivity and supporting government programmes such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), particularly among farming communities seeking to improve household incomes.
