The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) is undertaking a major water infrastructure project aimed at improving the reliability of water supply across the Kampala Metropolitan Service Area.As part of the ongoing project, NWSC, working under the Government of Uganda, is constructing a 10-million-litre-capacity water reservoir on top of Kanyanya Hill.

The facility is expected to increase water storage capacity and strengthen the distribution network serving Kampala and surrounding areas. The new reservoir is being developed to enable NWSC to evacuate more water from the Katosi Water Treatment Plant. By increasing the amount of treated water that can be moved into the distribution system, the project is expected to improve supply reliability in communities that continue to experience pressure caused by growing demand.A large number of communities in Wakiso District are expected to benefit from the improved water supply. These include Bugembegembe, Kayunga, Wakiso Town, Kasengeje, Gombe, Mende, Nkoowe, Kasa Ngombe, Sala, Sanda Kavumba, Mpunga, Namasanga, Buyera, Muyomba, Kikokiro, Kapeke, Kiwazi, Kisimbiri, Kabowa, Najjemba, Nakasuga, Namusera, Kyoga and Banda. The project will also support communities served by the Kakiri and Gayaza branches. Areas including Kakiri Town, Kikumbampa, Sebi, Kigaga, Mpegwe, Nakyelongosa, Kambe, Nadangira, Kitereede, Busujja, Nonve, Naguru, Buwanuka, Vugamira, Bukalango, Kasangati, Bulumu, Kiwamulimu, Namavundu, Kayebe, Kyankima, Kitegomba, Gitta, Nabutaka, Nalusoga, Buwagga, Bukemba, Majijje and Wampewo are among those expected to benefit.Residents in areas supplied through the Nansana and Kanyanya branches are also targeted. These include Wamala, Katooke A and B, Gganda Nasere, Nsumbi, Kawoko, Kabulengwa, Kireka Biira, Nakabugo, Kyebando, Kabumbi, Yesu Amala, Naluvule, Ssenge, Masiitowa, Mutuyanye, parts of Nabweru, Kibwa, Kanyanya, Kyanja, Tula Road, Kakungulu, Mpererwe, Namasole, Mugalu and Mwaze.Other communities under the Luteete and Matugga branches are also expected to see improvements once the project is fully operational.

They include Katalemwa Estate, Komamboga, Kitala, Kanyanya Road, Kanyanya Hill, Nameere, Kiteezi, Lusanja, Masooli, Kitetika, Nangabo, Bamba, Bumbu, Kitagobwa, Nakanaku, Kiryagonja, Lwadda, Matugga, Buwuzzume, Kungu, Kito, Kirwanira, Kabunza, Wattuba, Namalele, Kawanda, Kagoma, Kanyogoga, Kivuru, Maganjo and several other surrounding communities. The development comes at a time when Kampala and the neighbouring Wakiso areas continue to experience rapid population growth and expanding residential settlements, increasing the demand for reliable access to clean water. By strengthening storage and distribution infrastructure, NWSC aims to ensure that more households and businesses can receive a dependable water supply. With the construction of the Kanyanya Hill reservoir ongoing, attention is now turning to the completion and operationalisation of the facility. If successfully delivered, the project will mark another significant step in strengthening Uganda’s urban water infrastructure and improving service delivery across the metropolitan area
