The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has called on university students to become more careful consumers and users of information, urging them to verify facts before sharing content and to use digital platforms responsibly. The call was made as Season 4 of the Ultimate University Quiz officially gets underway.UCC joined other partners at an orientation session held at the International Business, Science and Technology University (ISBAT University) in Kampala, where students, organisers and supporting partners gathered ahead of the new quiz season.

The programme is designed to combine competition with learning and intellectual engagement. The Ultimate University Quiz gives students from universities an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge while strengthening skills such as critical thinking, communication and confidence. The initiative is being supported by partners including the Bank of Uganda, New Vision, Uganda Revenue Authority and Turkish Airlines.Speaking on behalf of UCC, James Tumusiime, the Commission’s Manager of Public and International Relations, emphasised the importance of involving young people in conversations about responsible communication and the proper use of digital and communication services.

Tumusiime challenged students to take greater responsibility for their education by developing the habit of questioning information and checking its accuracy before believing it or passing it on to others. He noted that the increasing popularity of social media and other online platforms requires young people to understand the possible impact of their digital behaviour. He further cautioned students to be mindful of what they publish, share or leave behind online, pointing to the importance of maintaining a responsible digital footprint. According to Tumusiime, information and activities posted online can remain relevant for a long time and may affect opportunities available to an individual even after university.

The orientation was held as participating students prepare for another edition of the university quiz, which seeks to go beyond academic competition by helping students develop abilities that are increasingly valuable in the digital era. The programme also creates opportunities for students to interact, exchange knowledge and gain confidence in presenting their ideas.Through its involvement in the initiative, UCC continues to encourage responsible digital citizenship among young people, calling on students to use technology positively while strengthening the critical thinking and information-checking skills needed to navigate an increasingly digital and information-driven society.
