The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has briefed President Yoweri Museveni on measures being undertaken to guarantee adequate and reliable water supply in Hoima, Masindi and Kabalega International Airport ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).The update was presented by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, who chairs the National AFCON Task Force, during a meeting at State House, Entebbe, on Tuesday, September 22, 2026. The meeting brought together officials involved in Uganda’s preparations for the continental tournament, including NWSC Managing Director Eng. Dr. Silver Mugisha.Uganda will co-host the 2027 AFCON with Kenya and Tanzania from June 16 to July 19. As part of preparations, authorities are working to improve essential infrastructure and services in areas that will host matches and accommodate visitors during the tournament.

In Hoima, NWSC has completed water supply works for Hoima City Stadium. The facility is being supplied by two boreholes located at Mparo and Kyarwiru, which produce 25 and 15 cubic metres of water per hour respectively. The two water sources have been developed, connected to the stadium and commissioned.Meanwhile, the wider project to stabilise water supply in Hoima City is at 32 percent. The works are expected to increase the city’s supply by 2,000 cubic metres of treated water per day and include a treatment plant at Kafu-Rwoga, a 2.9-kilometre raw water pipeline and a 300-cubic-metre balancing reservoir.Progress on the project includes 90 percent completion of excavation for the River Kafu intake, 50 percent progress on power extension to the project sites and 15 percent completion of steel reinforcement and concrete works for the treatment plant. Surveys of the pipeline routes have also been completed.NWSC has since expanded its AFCON assignment to include water supply improvements at Kabalega International Airport and Masindi Town.

The airport project proposes increasing the Kafu treatment plant from 2,000 to 3,000 cubic metres per day, constructing a 36-kilometre bulk transfer main and building a 200-cubic-metre reservoir, while Masindi will receive pipeline upgrades, pumping equipment and extensions to the stadium and designated hotel. The combined water interventions are estimated to cost UGX 22.15 billion, with UGX 6.25 billion already secured for ongoing civil works and UGX 15.9 billion still required for the remaining activities. Prime Minister Nabbanja said the works are targeted for completion by February 2027, several months before the tournament, as Uganda continues preparations to host AFCON alongside its East African partners.
