URA Takes Tax Compliance Drive to Kiryandongo Local Government

The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has taken its tax education and compliance drive to Kiryandongo Local Government, engaging officials on the need for accurate tax declarations and proper payment of taxes.
The engagement by URA’s Public Sector Office is focused on closing gaps identified in some of the local government’s tax records and helping officials strengthen the way tax returns and payments are handled.

Sandra Namatovu, Supervisor at the URA Public Sector Office responsible for Local Government, said Kiryandongo has maintained a record of proper and consistent tax payments. She, however, noted that some challenges had been identified in the details submitted in certain returns and payments.

Namatovu explained that even where payments are being made consistently, incorrect information in tax returns can create difficulties when URA is reconciling an institution’s records. The officials are therefore being encouraged to ensure that all information submitted is complete and accurate.
During the engagement, URA officials are reviewing the tax compliance history of Kiryandongo Local Government together with its officials. The exercise is intended to identify areas that require correction while giving the institution practical guidance on meeting its tax obligations.

The local government officials are also being taken through recent tax amendments and other initiatives introduced by URA. The tax education is intended to improve understanding of obligations and help officials respond appropriately to changes in tax administration.
URA has urged the officials to take greater care when preparing and submitting tax returns and when making payments. Correct information and properly matched payments, the authority says, are essential for smooth reconciliation and can help prevent avoidable compliance issues.
The Kiryandongo engagement forms part of URA’s continued efforts to work closely with local governments and other public institutions. Through direct engagement, tax education and compliance reviews, URA is seeking to promote accurate filing, proper payment and stronger tax administration across the public sector.
