Equity Bank Uganda has launched the Equity Green Schools Program, a new environmental initiative aimed at promoting tree planting and environmental awareness in schools across the country. The two-year program, launched at Nakanyonyi Secondary School in partnership with My Tree Initiative Uganda, targets planting, protecting and nurturing 200,000 trees in schools by December 2027.

The initiative will begin with 50,000 trees planted across 25 schools during the first year, with students and communities taking an active role in caring for the trees. At the launch, 3,500 trees were planted at Nakanyonyi Secondary School, marking the beginning of the nationwide campaign.Equity Bank Uganda Managing Director Gift Shoko said the initiative is about more than simply putting trees into the ground, but creating a lasting environmental legacy for future generations.“This is more than a tree-planting initiative.

It is a commitment to the future of our environment, our communities and, most importantly, the young people who will inherit the Uganda we build today,” Shoko said.He added that the trees planted at Nakanyonyi should serve as a lasting reminder of what communities, institutions and young people can achieve when they work together. The program places young people at the centre of environmental action by giving students an opportunity to participate directly in building greener and more resilient communities.Equity Bank says the initiative forms part of its wider commitment to sustainable development, with environmental protection viewed as an important part of strengthening communities and supporting long-term economic resilience.
