The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) is ready to take part in the Independence Marathon 2026, set to take place at Namboole on October 4, as Ugandans come together for a sporting event aimed at supporting a life-saving cause. This year’s marathon, dubbed #SaveAMother, will use the power of sport to support the Mengo Hospital Blood Bank.

The initiative seeks to improve blood storage capacity, helping ensure that safe blood is available for patients who need urgent transfusions.URSB has encouraged its staff and other participants to prepare for the event and choose a distance that suits them. Runners will have four options to choose from, including the full 42.2-kilometre marathon, the 21.1-kilometre half marathon, the 10-kilometre race and the 5-kilometre run.The different distances are expected to give people of different fitness levels an opportunity to participate.

Whether someone is an experienced long-distance runner or simply wants to take part in a meaningful community event, there is a distance to match their ability.Beyond the competition and physical exercise, the Independence Marathon is designed to create awareness and raise support for a cause that directly affects lives. Access to properly stored blood is important for hospitals, especially when treating mothers and other patients who require emergency transfusions. The #SaveAMother campaign therefore gives participants an opportunity to combine fitness with service to the community.

Every runner taking part will be contributing to a wider effort to strengthen blood storage at Mengo Hospital and support better access to lifesaving transfusions. With the event set for October 4 at Namboole, URSB is calling on its staff, partners and members of the public to lace up their running shoes and join the marathon. Participants can choose their preferred distance and prepare to be part of the day.As Uganda celebrates its Independence, the marathon will provide an opportunity for people to come together, stay healthy and support a cause that can help save lives. The question now is simple: 42.2KM, 21.1KM, 10KM or 5KM? The choice is yours. See you at Namboole.
