The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has applauded the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) for integrating the National Identification Number (NIN) into its member processes. The integration is aimed at strengthening the connection between workers’ identities, employment records, social security contributions and benefits.
NIRA appreciates the important role played by NSSF in using reliable identification information to improve the management of workers’ social security records.Through the integration of the NIN, NSSF is able to connect workers to their social security records using a unique national identity reference.NSSF has noted that the NIN helps the Fund track workers from their employment payroll through to the social security system. This enables workers’ employment and contribution records to be more closely linked to their verified identities. The NIN is also used as part of the requirements for accessing certain NSSF services, including midterm access.
NSSF may also verify member information with NIRA and other relevant institutions where necessary.NIRA says this type of cooperation demonstrates the importance of national identification in improving access to essential services.By linking a worker’s identity to their social security records, the system can help ensure that contributions are associated with the correct member. The integration also provides an additional layer of verification when workers seek to access their social security services and benefits. It can help reduce opportunities for fraudulent claims arising from the use of incorrect or false identities. For workers, accurate identification is important because social security contributions are made over a period of employment and are expected to remain attached to the correct individual. The use of the NIN therefore provides NSSF with a reliable identity reference when managing member information.
The cooperation between NIRA and NSSF also demonstrates how national identification can support different government and public institutions in delivering services.NIRA’s national identification system provides a foundation for institutions to verify individuals and connect them to services that require accurate personal information.NSSF’s adoption of the NIN further strengthens the use of national identification in Uganda’s social security system. The relationship between the two institutions is expected to support better record management while strengthening the protection of workers’ contributions and entitlements. It also highlights the wider importance of having accurate and trusted identity information across public service systems.NIRA has therefore appreciated NSSF for its participation and support in strengthening the link between national identity and social security services.Ultimately, the integration of the NIN into NSSF processes helps create a stronger connection between a worker’s identity, employment, contributions and entitlement to social security benefits.
