NIRA Highlights URA’s Major Role As National ID Becomes Central To Uganda’s Tax System

The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has recognized the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) for demonstrating how national identity is becoming increasingly important in Uganda’s tax administration system.URA’s participation at the #MyIdentityExpoAndSymposium26 gave citizens and other stakeholders an opportunity to understand the growing connection between national identification and the administration of taxes in the country.

In September 2026, Cabinet approved the use of the National Identification Number (NIN) issued by NIRA as the primary Tax Identification Number for individual taxpayers, marking a significant change in how taxpayers will be identified within the tax system. The transition will involve mapping existing Tax Identification Numbers (TINs) to NINs, creating a closer link between the national identification system and Uganda’s tax administration framework. The development is expected to make it easier for government systems to identify individual taxpayers while strengthening the accuracy and reliability of taxpayer information.

At the expo, URA provided an opportunity for citizens to gain a clearer understanding of what the transition means and how the NIN will increasingly become part of their interaction with the tax administration system. The engagement also helped demystify the changes by allowing members of the public to learn directly about the relationship between their national identity information and tax registration.NIRA’s recognition of URA at the expo highlights the growing importance of collaboration between national identification and tax administration institutions as Uganda continues to develop a more integrated and efficient public service system.
