The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has engaged real estate stakeholders in Kapchorwa Municipality to educate them about their tax responsibilities and promote voluntary tax compliance. The engagement, held yesterday in partnership with Kapchorwa Municipal Council authorities, focused on helping property owners, landlords and other players in the real estate sector understand the different taxes applicable to their activities.
During the meeting, URA explained the difference between Property Tax, which is paid to local governments, and Rental Income Tax, which is collected by the national tax authority. The sensitisation was intended to address misunderstandings about the two taxes.URA highlighted the importance of understanding the separate roles played by local governments and the tax authority in collecting revenue. The knowledge is expected to help real estate stakeholders identify their tax obligations and comply with the relevant requirements.
Kapchorwa Municipality Mayor Francis Chemisto, who addressed the meeting, described the engagement as an important initiative aimed at equipping people with the right information about taxation.Chemisto noted that educating taxpayers empowers them to fulfil their responsibilities and contribute to development through the payment of taxes.
Revenue collected by government institutions supports public services and development activities. The real estate stakeholders welcomed URA’s continued efforts to educate them about taxation. They appreciated the authority for providing information to help them understand their obligations and pledged to comply with the applicable tax requirements. The engagement demonstrates URA’s continued collaboration with local government authorities to improve taxpayer awareness, encourage compliance and strengthen revenue collection through education and direct interaction with the business community.
