Gen. David Muhoozi is making a high-profile return to the military after being recalled to active service by the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF), ending days of uncertainty surrounding his future following his exit from Cabinet. The development signals that the veteran commander remains firmly within the country’s security and leadership framework.

The recall follows President Yoweri Museveni’s recent Cabinet reshuffle, which saw Muhoozi dropped from his position as State Minister for Internal Affairs. Rather than stepping away from public service, the four-star General has now been directed to rejoin the military establishment ahead of a fresh deployment.

Although military authorities have confirmed his return to active duty, details regarding his next assignment remain closely guarded. Neither the Ministry of Defence nor UPDF leadership has publicly disclosed where the former Chief of Defence Forces will be positioned.

Muhoozi’s military career is among the most distinguished in the country, stretching back to the early years of the National Resistance Army. Through decades of service, he held several influential command positions that shaped his reputation as one of Uganda’s most experienced officers.

His rise through the ranks eventually culminated in his appointment as Chief of Defence Forces in 2017. During his four-year tenure, the UPDF strengthened its operational capabilities, expanded regional security engagements, and advanced key modernization and training programs aimed at improving military effectiveness.

In 2021, he transitioned from military leadership into government, taking charge of responsibilities within the Ministry of Internal Affairs. His role placed him at the center of critical sectors including immigration, citizenship services, national identification systems, prisons, and broader internal security coordination.

Following his omission from the new Cabinet lineup, speculation quickly spread about whether the seasoned General would retire or pursue another public role. His return to the barracks has now answered part of that debate, while opening fresh questions about the strategic responsibilities that may await him.
Security analysts believe Muhoozi’s extensive expertise in command, defense planning, and national security makes him a valuable asset for any high-level assignment. As the nation awaits an official announcement, his return to the UPDF stands as a clear indication that his contribution to Uganda’s security landscape is far from over.
