Entebbe International Airport, Uganda’s main gateway to the world, has seen remarkable growth in both passenger and cargo traffic over the past several years. According to the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) traffic statistics, the numbers reflect an encouraging trend, with the airport handling millions of passengers and tonnes of cargo annually. In 2019, Entebbe International Airport served 1,802,107 international passengers, a figure that set the stage for an upward trajectory. The following year, the global pandemic caused a significant downturn in aviation worldwide, and Uganda was no exception. Passenger numbers plummeted to 565,541 in 2020, while cargo imports and exports were also affected. Despite this setback, the airport swiftly rebounded in 2021, with passenger numbers climbing back up to 941,688. This marked the beginning of a steady recovery, with 2022 seeing a remarkable jump to 1,574,405 international passengers. The years following the pandemic have shown impressive growth, particularly in passenger traffic. By 2024, the airport had already surpassed the 2 million mark with 1,932,094 international passengers, and by 2025, the number hit an outstanding 2,486,893 passengers, setting a new record. The increase in passenger numbers is a reflection of the global recovery from the pandemic, along with the growing appeal of Uganda as a travel destination. In terms of cargo, Entebbe has also witnessed growth. In 2019, the airport handled a total of 64,731 tonnes of cargo, comprising both imports and exports. Despite the challenges faced in 2020, cargo operations were quickly restored, with total cargo figures rising steadily. By 2025, the total cargo handled reached 69,595 tonnes, a remarkable achievement that demonstrates the airport’s importance as a regional hub for both imports and exports. Cargo imports have consistently outpaced exports, with 2025 exports totaling 45,899 tonnes.Overflight traffic has also been an integral part of the airport’s operations, growing each year. For instance, in 2019, overflight movements totaled 15,936, a number that climbed progressively, reaching 24,597 in 2025. This increase highlights Entebbe’s role in connecting international flights that do not necessarily land at the airport but still contribute to its air traffic activities.Looking ahead, the forecasted traffic for 2026 and beyond is poised to keep climbing. The airport is on track to continue expanding its capacity and influence in both passenger and cargo traffic. As global travel recovers and Uganda strengthens its position as a business hub in East Africa, Entebbe International Airport is set to play an even more prominent role in the country’s economic growth.
