The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has underscored its commitment to improving urban sanitation while supporting the Buganda Kingdom’s annual Kabaka Birthday Run. The announcement was made on April 1, 2025, when KCCA Executive Director Hajjat Sharifah Buzeki led a delegation to Bulange Mengo, presenting UGX 7 million in support of the event and calling for stronger waste management practices in Kampala.During the meeting, Buzeki emphasized that a cleaner city is a healthier city, urging both the Buganda Kingdom and residents to embrace responsible garbage disposal. She called for the separation of degradable and non-degradable waste as a key step toward efficient waste management and improved urban hygiene.“We want Kampala to be healthy and clean, and that starts with proper waste management,” Buzeki said. “Kampala belongs to all of us, and together we must ensure it remains clean and sustainable.”Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga acknowledged the city’s waste management challenges, attributing them to rapid urbanization and changing lifestyles. He noted that many residents continue to apply informal rural habits to waste disposal, which affects sanitation in the urban setting. “In the city, we must learn to properly manage waste, just as we have adapted to modern attire and practices,” he remarked.Mayiga highlighted that proper waste disposal not only enhances public health but also contributes to greener parks, cleaner public spaces, and better-functioning urban services. He stressed that a waste-free environment benefits all aspects of city life. This year’s Kabaka 70th Birthday Run, themed “Men for Good Health to Save the Girl Child and the Fight Against HIV/AIDS 2030,” is scheduled for Sunday, April 6, 2025. While the primary focus is health awareness and HIV/AIDS prevention, KCCA sees the event as an ideal platform to promote environmental responsibility among residents.Buzeki encouraged all Kampala residents to participate in the run and use it as an opportunity to reinforce proper waste handling habits, emphasizing that civic responsibility begins with individual action. With KCCA’s active involvement, the Kabaka Birthday Run promises not only to celebrate health and community spirit but also to serve as a rallying point for a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Kampala.
