Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has reaffirmed its commitment to modernising public markets and expanding trading spaces as part of a broader effort to uplift the livelihoods of vendors across the city. The assurance was given by KCCA Executive Director Dorothy Kisaka during a high-level engagement with leaders from the 16 public markets managed by the Authority, held at Kololo Grounds on September 6, 2024.Kisaka said KCCA has set aside dedicated funding to upgrade market infrastructure, noting that well-planned and properly maintained markets are central to economic growth, public health, and dignified working conditions for traders. She stressed that the Authority’s focus goes beyond physical structures, aiming to create cleaner, safer, and more organised trading environments that support productivity and attract more customers to city markets. The meeting, convened by Maj Emma Kutesa, Presidential Assistant in Special Operations at State House, provided a platform for market leaders to present key challenges affecting vendors, including sanitation, security, and space constraints.Several markets are already benefiting from recent improvements. Bukoto, Kiswa, and Namuwongo markets now have upgraded sanitation facilities, while St Balikuddembe Market has received solar lighting and improved flooring to enhance safety and hygiene.Construction works at Kitintale Market in Nakawa Division and Kiseeka Market in Central Division are nearing completion, while Busega Market in Rubaga Division is in its final stages, with access roads and parking facilities being readied ahead of its official opening.Kisaka noted that the ongoing upgrades align with the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government’s goal of integrating urban residents into the money economy through job creation and strengthened local commerce, a move expected to significantly boost vendors’ incomes and Kampala’s overall economic vitality.
