Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has announced plans to strengthen garbage collection across the capital by deploying more waste trucks, as the authority moves to tackle the growing problem of rubbish piling up along roads and in public spaces.KCCA Executive Director Hajjat Sharifah Buzeki said the authority is in the final stages of establishing a new waste collection arrangement that will see designated trucks assigned to specific areas of the city, making it easier for residents to know when and where their garbage will be collected.
Buzeki urged residents to take responsibility for their waste by keeping it properly stored until the designated collection trucks arrive, instead of leaving rubbish on roadsides or other unauthorised locations.“We are finalizing the arrangements for the trucks that will be collecting garbage. Every area will have a truck, and we want people to ensure that their garbage is properly kept until the truck comes to collect it,” Buzeki said. The KCCA chief warned that roadside dumping would not be tolerated, noting that poorly disposed waste is often swept into drainage channels when it rains, blocking water flow and increasing the likelihood of flooding in different parts of the city.
She added that KCCA will work closely with local leaders to coordinate the new garbage collection system and ensure residents receive clear information about collection schedules and designated waste disposal points.Buzeki made the remarks while meeting residents of Nakawa during celebrations to mark her birthday, where community members also raised concerns about sanitation, particularly the shortage of public toilets, warning that poor hygiene could increase the risk of disease outbreaks
.The residents further appealed to KCCA to intervene in the eviction of Parish Development Model (PDM) beneficiaries operating along roadside spaces and help identify alternative areas where the affected traders can continue their businesses and recover investments made through the government programme. They also congratulated Buzeki on her birthday and joined her in cutting a cake during the celebrations.
