Water services in Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement could soon receive a major boost after the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) and UNHCR joined forces to assess the settlement’s existing water systems. The joint team conducted the assessment to establish the condition of the infrastructure and identify outstanding gaps that need to be addressed before the systems are handed over to NWSC.

The exercise is expected to provide a clear picture of the improvements required to support reliable water services.Officials from the three institutions inspected the water facilities and held discussions on practical measures that can improve access to clean and safe water in the settlement. The assessment focused on identifying weaknesses while exploring opportunities to strengthen the systems already in place. The partners are now looking at investments that can improve the existing infrastructure and make it more effective and sustainable. The planned interventions are expected to increase the ability of the water systems to serve the growing needs of people living in the settlement.Water quality has also emerged as a key area of focus. The planned improvements are expected to strengthen water management and quality, ensuring that communities have better access to water that is safe for domestic use and other essential activities. The initiative is particularly important for refugee communities, where dependable water services are vital for maintaining good hygiene, protecting public health and supporting the daily lives of families. Improved infrastructure could also benefit facilities and services operating within the settlement.

The eventual handover of the water systems to NWSC is expected to pave the way for more structured management and continued investment in the infrastructure. Before that transition takes place, the partners are working to ensure that the identified gaps are properly addressed. The latest collaboration reflects a shared commitment by NWSC, OPM and UNHCR to strengthen water and sanitation services in refugee-hosting communities. As preparations continue, the partners are working towards a more reliable water supply system that will improve access to clean and safe water for people in Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement.
