The National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB) has earned praise for its outstanding contribution to livestock development in Greater Busoga during President Yoweri Museveni’s wealth creation tour. The agency has been supporting the Parish Development Model (PDM) through improved livestock breeding, community outreach, animal feed production and farmer training. More than 7,000 farmers are reportedly benefiting from its programmes in the region.A major highlight is the transformation of Kasolwe Stock Farm in Kamuli into a Centre of Excellence, hosting poultry, fish, piggery, goat and cattle breeding enterprises, alongside a 5-tonne-per-hour animal feed mill supplying affordable feeds to farmers.
The centre also has a skilling and knowledge-transfer facility that trains farmers, students and veterinary professionals in modern livestock, poultry and fish production. In Njeru, a government liquid nitrogen plant is supporting artificial breeding and has benefited more than 4,000 farmers, while a community breeding satellite centre in Iganga has reached over 1,500 farmers through training and artificial insemination programmes.Farmers have welcomed the initiatives, saying access to improved breeds, affordable feeds and modern farming knowledge has boosted production and household incomes.
