NAGRC&DB Plans Mass Livestock Breeding Drive to Boost PDM Farmers

The National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB) is planning to intensify mass livestock breeding and multiplication to increase the supply of improved dairy heifers, poultry chicks and piglets to farmers under the Parish Development Model (PDM).
The initiative is aimed at expanding access to superior genetics, increasing livestock productivity and helping smallholder farmers move from subsistence to commercial agriculture.

The plans were discussed during a two-day NAGRC&DB strategic retreat held in Entebbe on August 6–7, where the Board and management reviewed priorities for the 2026/2027 financial year.
NAGRC&DB Board Chairperson Ben Anyama said the agency will focus on multiplying high-performing and climate-smart breeds while ensuring improved genetics reach farmers across the country.
“This is not just about increasing numbers; it is about ensuring that every farmer, regardless of scale, can access superior genetics,” Anyama said.

The agency is also expanding community-based breeding programmes, providing farmers with training in genetic selection, artificial insemination, disease control and modern animal husbandry.
Meanwhile, Kasolwe Stock Farm in Kamuli has been positioned as a major livestock multiplication centre, with investments in improved breeds, animal feeds and forage production.
NAGRC&DB says the programme will strengthen its partnership with PDM and help more rural households access quality livestock for income generation.
