The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has opened applications for 39 critical positions, inviting skilled Ugandans to join its mission of safeguarding the country’s environment. Dr. Barirega Akakwasah, NEMA’s Executive Director, announced the recruitment as part of the authority’s drive to strengthen environmental management and regulatory oversight nationwide.

In an official notice dated February 16, 2026, Dr. Barirega encouraged qualified candidates to submit their applications before the March 17, 2026 deadline. This recruitment campaign targets professionals with expertise in environmental protection, project coordination, legal affairs, intelligence, and operational roles, reflecting NEMA’s broad and strategic mandate.

The vacancies include high-level roles such as Principal Investigation Officer, Principal Environment Protection Officer – Operations, and Principal Environment Officer specializing in Soils and Land Use. Candidates with experience in environmental projects and technical coordination are particularly urged to apply, including for the National Technical Coordinator role for the Circular and POPs-free NEMA CPl – Plastics in Africa project.

Senior positions in intelligence, investigation, and legal services are also on offer, alongside project-specific appointments like Communication Officer and Value Chain Officer for the Mt. Elgon Project. Additionally, NEMA is recruiting operational staff, including Environment Inspectors, Rangers, Administrative Officers, and Drivers, to enhance field operations across the country.

Interested applicants must download the application form from the NEMA website, complete it accurately, and combine all supporting documents into a single PDF. Required documents include academic transcripts, professional certifications, employment letters, and any other relevant credentials. The file should be clearly named with the position applied for and the applicant’s name.

All applications must be submitted via email to ed@nema.go.ug by the closing date. Submissions that are incomplete, not in a single PDF, or sent after the deadline will be automatically disqualified. Candidates may apply for a maximum of two positions.
NEMA has made it clear that the recruitment process is strictly merit-based. Any attempt to influence the Executive Director, Board members, or other officials will result in immediate disqualification. Only candidates who meet the required criteria and succeed at each stage will be contacted for further assessment.

This recruitment drive offers Ugandans a rare opportunity to contribute to environmental protection and sustainable development. From strategic leadership roles to operational field positions, successful applicants will play a direct role in shaping Uganda’s environmental policies and safeguarding its natural resources.
