The long wait for the return of Nation Media Group’s operations in Uganda could soon come to an end after fresh reports indicated that the company and the government have reached a major breakthrough in negotiations. Sources familiar with the discussions say the remaining issues have largely been settled, bringing NTV Uganda, Daily Monitor and the group’s other media platforms closer to reopening. The latest development follows a meeting between Nation Media Group’s Chief Executive Officer, Geoffrey Odundo, and Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) Executive Director George William Nyombi Thembo.
Although Nyombi Thembo described the meeting as a courtesy visit and did not reveal what was discussed, many believe it was an important step towards restoring the media company’s operations. As Uganda’s communications regulator, the UCC plays a key role in overseeing television and radio broadcasters. Because of this responsibility, the meeting has raised expectations that the prolonged shutdown of Nation Media Group’s outlets may soon be lifted once all agreed procedures are completed.Sources involved in the process say both sides have agreed on the terms required for the company to resume normal operations. However, neither the government nor Nation Media Group had officially announced the exact date when the affected media houses would reopen by the time of publication. The latest talks come after several high-level engagements between government officials and Nation Media Group representatives.
Among them was a meeting between President Yoweri Museveni and Taifa Group Chairman Rostam Azizi at State House Entebbe. Although the agenda of the meeting was not made public, it was widely linked to ongoing efforts to resolve the media standoff. Before that, Azizi and other Nation Media Group officials also held discussions with Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba at the Special Forces Command headquarters in Entebbe. Gen. Muhoozi had earlier stated that the final decision regarding the reopening of the affected media outlets would be made by President Museveni.
Nation Media Group’s Uganda operations were suspended on June 28, 2026, after military personnel were deployed to the company’s Kampala premises. The action disrupted the operations of Daily Monitor, NTV Uganda, and several other television, radio, print and digital platforms owned by the media group, prompting immediate negotiations with government authorities.
With the latest meeting now completed and reports indicating that the key conditions have been agreed upon, optimism is growing that the media giant will soon resume full operations. While an official reopening date is yet to be confirmed, sources insist that the question is no longer whether Nation Media Group will return, but how soon the final announcement will be made.
