The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), working with the Government of Uganda, is advancing the Hoima Water Supply Improvement Project as the city prepares for increased demand for water driven by rapid urbanisation, industrial development and the growth of Uganda’s oil and gas sector.
The project is part of the government’s wider investment in critical infrastructure in the Albertine Region and is also expected to support the infrastructure needs associated with AFCON. Hoima has been undergoing major development in recent years as investment and economic activity continue to increase across the region.Under the Hoima 2 project, water will be drawn from River Kafu in Kikuube District and taken to a new conventional water treatment plant. The water will then be treated and transported to Hoima City through a bulk water transfer system designed to strengthen the city’s supply network.
The planned treatment plant will have the capacity to produce three million litres of water per day. The project will also provide about 25 kilometres of transmission and distribution pipelines, together with a 300-cubic-metre elevated steel reservoir at Musaijamukulu Hill. The new infrastructure will also include pumping facilities, electrical installations and additional storage facilities needed to support the movement and distribution of water. These components are expected to improve the capacity of the water system as demand continues to rise. The Hoima 2 project will add capacity to the existing Hoima 1 system, which has provided water to the city for many years but is facing increasing pressure.
Population growth, expanding settlements and rising industrial activity associated with the oil and gas sector have created a need for additional water supply capacity.Beyond Hoima 2, NWSC and the Government of Uganda are finalising designs for the proposed Hoima 3 Water Supply System. The longer-term project is expected to significantly increase water production, transmission and storage capacity, with plans to eventually integrate the different systems into one network. The development of Hoima’s water infrastructure comes at a time when the city is taking on a bigger role in Uganda’s economic development. Through the Hoima 2 project and the planned Hoima 3 system, NWSC and the government are working to ensure that water services grow alongside the city, industries and investments emerging in the Albertine Region.
