Reinstated Amid Rivalry! Mukiza Returns as UIA Boss Despite Explosive Fallout

President Yoweri Museveni has renewed the tenure of Robert Mukiza as head of the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA), a move that has stirred fresh debate given the high-profile conflict that engulfed the agency in 2024. The reappointment signals continuity, but it also revives memories of a bitter institutional clash.

The controversy was largely driven by a fierce standoff between Mukiza and State Minister for Investment Evelyn Anite. The dispute captured national attention after allegations surfaced that senior officials at UIA had shared Shs545 million among themselves as “honoraria,” funds reportedly tied to the Namanve Industrial Park project.

Anite openly criticized the payments, portraying them as a serious breach of trust and misuse of public funds. She demanded that the money be returned and pushed for accountability, positioning herself as a defender of public interest in a case that quickly gained political weight.

Mukiza, on his part, firmly denied any wrongdoing. He insisted that the payments were not only lawful but also sanctioned by the relevant board, describing them as compensation for extra duties performed by staff. His response set off a prolonged exchange of accusations between the two leaders.

The dispute escalated further when Mukiza accused Anite of attempting to exert undue influence over the authority’s operations. He alleged that she had engaged external actors, including the British High Commission, to sway decisions—claims that intensified the already strained relationship.

As the standoff deepened, President Museveni intervened, calling for investigations and urging both parties to resolve their differences. His involvement highlighted the seriousness of the situation and its potential implications for Uganda’s investment credibility.

Later developments added new layers to the unfolding drama. An inquiry led by Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka cleared UIA officials in relation to a separate Shs32 billion transaction, a finding that appeared to bolster Mukiza’s standing amid the controversy.
Even so, the saga did not end quietly.

Whistleblower claims emerged accusing Anite of influence peddling and conflicts of interest, complicating the narrative and leaving lingering doubts. Despite all this, Museveni’s decision to reappoint Mukiza underscores a vote of confidence, ensuring his continued leadership even as the echoes of the dispute persist.
