Relief Returns as NWSC Restores Water Supply After Major Katosi Plant Upgrade

Residents across Kampala, Mukono, and neighboring areas can finally breathe a sigh of relief after the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) completed critical upgrade and maintenance works at the Katosi Water Treatment Plant. The restoration comes after nearly two days of interrupted water supply that affected thousands of homes and businesses.

The temporary shutdown, which was necessary to allow engineers to carry out system upgrades and routine maintenance, caused widespread concern among residents who heavily depend on the Katosi plant for daily water supply. Many communities experienced dry taps as technicians worked around the clock to complete the exercise.

In an update released on Saturday, May 23, 2026, NWSC confirmed that the rehabilitation works had been successfully finalized and that efforts were now focused on restoring normal water distribution across the affected network. The corporation assured customers that recovery operations were already underway.
According to NWSC, engineers and water production teams immediately embarked on system recovery initiatives, including charging the pipelines with water, removing trapped airlocks, and stabilizing pressure within the network. Officials explained that restoring supply after a complete plant shutdown is a gradual process that requires careful monitoring.

The disruption affected a wide stretch of areas including Katosi, Kisoga, Mukono, Seeta, Mbalala, Namugongo, Namanve, Sonde, parts of Kireka, Kamuli, Kyaliwajala, Bulindo, Nsasa, Mulawa, Naalya, Ntinda, Kisaasi, Najeera, Luteete, Gayaza, parts of Kamwokya, Mbuya, and surrounding neighborhoods.
Residents in several of the affected areas had raised concerns over the prolonged water shortage, especially households, schools, hospitals, restaurants, and businesses that rely on continuous water access for daily operations. The interruption highlighted the importance of the Katosi plant within the greater Kampala water distribution system.
Despite the inconvenience caused, NWSC emphasized that the completed upgrade works are expected to improve operational efficiency, strengthen water supply reliability, and support growing demand in rapidly expanding urban centers around Kampala and Mukono. The corporation reaffirmed its commitment to improving service delivery through continuous infrastructure investment.

As water gradually returns to all affected areas, customers have been urged to remain patient while the network fully stabilizes. NWSC also encouraged the public to report any persistent supply challenges as technical teams continue monitoring the system to ensure complete restoration of normal service.
