With Uganda preparing to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) has stepped up efforts to strengthen aviation safety by bringing together aerodrome operators and key stakeholders for a two-day sensitisation workshop in Gulu City. The engagement focuses on proper land use planning and obstacle control around airfields, two critical areas that help ensure safe aircraft operations as the country prepares to welcome thousands of visitors, teams and officials during the continental football tournament.

Officials say protecting the airspace around aerodromes is essential in preventing structures, trees and other developments from becoming hazards that could affect aircraft during take-off and landing. The workshop has attracted aerodrome operators, local government officials, planners and other stakeholders whose decisions play a vital role in maintaining safe environments around airports and airstrips across Uganda.

Through the training, participants are being guided on aviation regulations, safety requirements and the importance of coordinating development activities with aviation authorities before approving projects near airfields.

UCAA believes that increased awareness among stakeholders will improve compliance with aviation safety standards while supporting the country’s readiness to handle increased air traffic expected during AFCON 2027.The authority has continued to invest in safety initiatives, infrastructure improvements and stakeholder engagement as part of broader preparations aimed at ensuring Uganda’s aviation sector meets international standards. As the countdown to AFCON 2027 continues, UCAA says collaboration between aviation authorities, local governments and communities will be key to protecting Uganda’s airspace and delivering a safe, efficient and world-class travel experience for all visitors.
