The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has thrown its weight behind a major regional cybersecurity gathering expected to bring together experts and policymakers to tackle growing digital security threats across East Africa. The 15th Annual East Africa Information Security Conference will be held from September 14 to 18, 2026, under the theme “Securing the Future through Digital Trust,” with discussions expected to centre on cybersecurity, information security and data protection.UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo expressed the commission’s commitment to the conference during a meeting with the leadership of the ISACA Kampala Chapter, headed by its president, Maurice Taremwa. The engagement focused on possible areas of cooperation between UCC and ISACA as stakeholders seek stronger approaches to securing the region’s rapidly expanding digital infrastructure and services.Thembo stressed that cybersecurity can no longer be treated as a secondary issue, arguing that reliable protection of information and personal data is vital to maintaining public confidence in digital platforms and services. He said the establishment of strong cybersecurity frameworks and effective data protection systems would not only protect users but also create a safer environment for businesses and governments to expand their digital operations. The UCC chief said the upcoming conference will give regional technology leaders, industry professionals and policymakers an opportunity to examine emerging cyber risks and develop practical responses to threats facing East Africa’s increasingly connected digital ecosystem.Thembo welcomed the opportunity for stakeholders to work together, saying UCC anticipates productive discussions and concrete outcomes that will contribute to stronger cybersecurity, greater digital trust and safer digital transformation across the region.
