The 10th National Conference on Communications (NCC 2026) has officially opened at Makerere University’s College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT), bringing together researchers, industry leaders, government representatives and young innovators to discuss the role of technology and innovation in Uganda’s development.

The conference is being held under the theme, “Accelerating Market-Driven Research and Innovation for Uganda’s Development,” which calls for stronger efforts to turn research findings into practical solutions that can respond to Uganda’s needs and improve people’s lives.

At the opening of the conference, appreciation was extended to the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Makerere University and the wider community of researchers, technology experts and young innovators for their continued support towards the growth of Uganda’s communications and technology sector.

The conference is placing emphasis on the need for research to move beyond generating knowledge and instead contribute directly to solving real challenges facing communities and businesses. Market-driven research is expected to help create products and services that can improve livelihoods while also supporting Uganda’s social and economic development.

The organisers are also encouraging young people to take an active role in innovation. This includes nurturing young minds through the Secondary School ICT Club Competition, which provides students with an opportunity to develop their interest and skills in information and communication technology.

The conference exhibitions are also providing a platform for local innovators to showcase homegrown solutions. These exhibitions are expected to create opportunities for researchers and innovators to connect with industry players and demonstrate how their ideas can be developed into useful products and services.

The link between research, technology and industrial development is also being highlighted through initiatives such as the recent visit to Kiira Motors. The visit demonstrated the importance of connecting innovation and research with industries that can apply new ideas to support local production and economic growth.

As Uganda’s communications sector regulator, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) continues to focus on creating an environment that supports emerging technologies and digital development. Key areas include artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, telecommunications and digital infrastructure.

The conference also highlights the importance of collaboration between universities, government and the private sector. By working together, these institutions can strengthen Uganda’s capacity to develop, adopt and adapt technologies that respond to local needs.

NCC 2026 therefore provides a platform for stakeholders to share knowledge, showcase innovations and explore ways of making research more useful to the economy. The conference comes at a time when Uganda continues to expand its digital sector and seek homegrown solutions to development challenges.
