Uganda Airlines Acting Chief Executive Officer Girma Wake has announced that the search for a substantive head of the national carrier has reached an advanced stage, with a shortlist of candidates expected to be presented to the airline’s Board in September.Speaking to journalists, Wake said the airline has moved beyond recent challenges and is now positioned for a stronger future, expressing confidence that Uganda Airlines has the potential to become a leading player in Africa’s aviation industry.“
The state of Uganda Airlines is very good. Yes, it has gone through a difficult period, but I believe it has a bright future,” Wake said, noting that the carrier is undergoing strategic improvements aimed at ensuring long-term stability and growth. The aviation veteran explained that Uganda Airlines’ decision to operate Boeing aircraft was based on the company’s wider support network across Africa, including easier access to technical services, training programmes and flight simulation facilities.Wake cautioned that building a successful national airline requires more than simply purchasing aircraft, saying governments and operators must invest in proper systems, infrastructure, skilled personnel and efficient management to guarantee sustainability. With over 60 years of experience in the aviation sector, Wake said he has witnessed African airlines struggle to compete globally, stressing the need for countries on the continent to strengthen their aviation capabilities and invest in professional expertise. He revealed that plans are underway to enhance the capacity of the Soroti Flying School through support from Boeing, enabling the institution to train pilots and aircraft engineers who can serve Uganda Airlines and reduce reliance on foreign professionals.
Wake also called on the media to play a constructive role in promoting national development, urging journalists to highlight progress while holding institutions accountable. “Media is there to sell the nation, not to destroy it,” he said. The announcement comes as Uganda Airlines continues implementing measures to improve operations, expand its technical capacity and prepare for a new leadership chapter that will guide the national carrier’s future expansion and competitiveness.
