The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has held an engagement with clearing agents at Mirama Hills, with discussions focusing on delays in customs procedures, the fight against smuggling and the growing use of technology to improve trade processes. The engagement, held on September 21, 2026, brought together customs stakeholders who openly shared their experiences and raised concerns about procedures that they said can sometimes take longer than expected.

The clearing agents called for improved efficiency in customs operations, noting that faster handling of processes and timely resolution of emerging issues would make it easier for traders to conduct legitimate cross-border business. The discussions also turned to smuggling, with participants being sensitised about the dangers of engaging in illicit trade. They were reminded of the economic impact of smuggling as well as the possible legal consequences for individuals involved in such activities.URA officials further took the agents through the difference between restricted and prohibited goods.

The clarification was intended to help traders and their representatives better understand which goods are subject to specific controls and which are not permitted to enter or leave the country.Technology was another major focus of the engagement, particularly the Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing Solution (EFRIS). The agents welcomed EFRIS and discussed how digital systems can contribute to greater transparency and compliance in commercial transactions.

The participants were also guided on how EFRIS operates and the sectors required to issue compliant electronic receipts and invoices. The sensitisation was aimed at addressing gaps in understanding while encouraging businesses to meet the applicable requirements. The engagement gave URA and clearing agents an opportunity to exchange practical experiences and discuss possible solutions to challenges affecting trade at Mirama Hills, with the discussions aimed at supporting faster, more transparent and compliant cross-border trade.
