The National Identification and Registration Authority has unveiled a WhatsApp service aimed at helping citizens quickly find out the status of their National ID cards and where to collect them from.
The move is intended to ease access to information and reduce the long waits many applicants have faced.
NIRA says Uganda has already printed more than seven million new National ID cards, but only a small portion has been collected. About 1.5 million cards are in the hands of applicants, while over 5.5 million remain stacked in district offices around the country.
According to the authority, one of the biggest challenges has been a lack of clear communication. Many applicants are unaware that their cards are ready, while others are unsure of the exact offices responsible for issuing them.
To solve this problem, NIRA introduced a WhatsApp line, 0766 501071, where applicants can send their application ID and receive instant feedback. The service provides clear information on whether a card is ready and the district office where it can be picked up.
NIRA explained that the new platform was developed after listening to public concerns about delays and limited updates. The authority says it is committed to improving how it communicates with citizens and ensuring timely, accurate information is shared.
The WhatsApp service is expected to cut down on unnecessary visits to NIRA offices, easing congestion and saving applicants both time and money. It also allows staff to focus more on issuing cards rather than handling repeated inquiries.
NIRA emphasized that its offices are open and functioning in all districts across Uganda. Applicants who confirm their cards are ready are encouraged to collect them without delay as printing and distribution continue.
For those unable to use WhatsApp, NIRA noted that inquiries can still be made through its toll-free line, 0800 211 700. The authority hopes these measures will help clear the backlog and ensure more Ugandans receive their National IDs.
