The Minister of Works and Transport Byamukama has directed the contractor working on the Kira-Matugga Road project to urgently step up construction efforts, warning that delays on the vital road project will no longer be tolerated. The Minister described the road as a key transport link that will help reduce traffic congestion in Kampala and improve movement between the northern and eastern corridors of the country.

During a site inspection on Monday, Byamukama expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of construction and instructed the contractor to deploy more resources to ensure the project progresses quickly and is completed within the agreed timeline. He explained that Government has already handled major challenges that had slowed down the project, including land acquisition issues, and is taking steps to address remaining compensation obligations for affected residents.Byamukama stressed that the contractor should not expect any additional time extensions after the current deadline, saying the focus must now shift to completing the road and delivering value to Ugandans.

The contractor has been tasked to finalize the Kyaliwajjala-Kira section of the road by December 2026, with the Minister emphasizing the importance of meeting the deadline. To improve conditions for road users during the ongoing works, the contractor has also been ordered to carry out regular dust control and maintenance on sections that are still under construction.Once completed, the Kira-Matugga Road is expected to provide a major alternative route, ease pressure on Kampala’s crowded roads and strengthen connectivity across the region.
