Rotary groups in Kampala have found themselves in an awkward position following growing uncertainty over a pledged Ugx 1 billion contribution that was earlier associated with former Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, intended to support charity and health-related projects. The commitment, which was reportedly communicated during a meeting with Rotary representatives, was meant to fund community initiatives such as the construction of specialized hospital facilities aimed at improving access to advanced medical care.
At the time the pledge was made, Rotary members welcomed it as a significant boost to their service programs, with expectations quickly building around how the funds would accelerate ongoing humanitarian work across Kampala and surrounding areas. However, questions have since emerged following changes in parliamentary leadership, with indications that the current Speaker, Jacob Oboth-Oboth, does not formally recognize the earlier commitment in its original form.
This shift has left Rotary representatives uncertain about the status of the pledged funds, especially after internal discussions suggested that such commitments may require fresh approval under the current parliamentary framework. Some officials within Parliament argue that financial promises made under previous administrative arrangements should be reassessed to align with existing budget priorities and accountability procedures.
The uncertainty has also sparked frustration among Rotary members, many of whom had already begun sharing expectations with local clubs and stakeholders based on the anticipated support. For now, Rotary leaders say they are seeking clarity and possible engagement with parliamentary authorities in hopes of determining whether the pledge can still be honored or if the initiative will need to be restructured entirely.
