A Will Cannot Decide Tooro’s Next King, Says Rev. Fr. Charles Oyo Amooti

Rev. Fr. Charles Oyo Amooti, a member of the royal Babiito clan, has rejected claims that the reported will of the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV should determine who succeeds him as King of Tooro.
Amooti argued that a will only expresses an individual’s wishes and should not override the traditional authority of the Babiito clan, which he said is responsible for providing a king for Tooro.

“The will, first of all, is not a determinant factor for the enthronement or selection. It is a wish of someone,” Amooti said, according to ChimpReports.
His comments come amid a succession dispute following the death of King Oyo on August 27, 2026, after a battle with cancer.

The Babiito clan has selected Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as Oyo’s successor, but some members of the royal family have challenged the decision, arguing that the late king’s reported will should be respected.
Amooti maintained that the Babiito clan had already made its decision through its leadership and that disagreements within the royal family would not change the outcome.

He also said the selection of a Tooro king should not be viewed as an ordinary political election, but as a process guided by the kingdom’s customs, traditions and the Constitution of Uganda.
The succession dispute therefore remains centred on differing interpretations of the late king’s reported will, Tooro traditions and the authority of the Babiito clan.
