Hon. Biara Emmanuel Wepukhulu represented the Parliament of Uganda at the launch of the Commonwealth Forest Initiative in Mabira Forest, joining government officials, development partners, environmental activists, and young conservationists in a renewed effort to safeguard Uganda’s natural resources. The event underscored the growing importance of environmental protection in shaping the country’s sustainable future.
Held within the iconic Mabira Forest, the initiative served as a platform to promote conservation, climate action, and responsible stewardship of natural ecosystems. Participants gathered with a shared vision of strengthening environmental resilience and encouraging practical solutions to address the challenges posed by deforestation and climate change.
Addressing those in attendance, Hon. Wepukhulu highlighted the immense value of forests to Uganda’s social and economic well-being. He noted that forests remain essential for maintaining ecological stability, supporting biodiversity, preserving water catchment areas, and sustaining the livelihoods of countless communities across the country.
He emphasized that the responsibility of protecting the environment cannot be left to a few institutions alone.
Rather, it requires the active participation of leaders, communities, private sector actors, and ordinary citizens working together to ensure that natural resources are managed responsibly and preserved for future generations.
One of the most inspiring moments of the day was the active involvement of young people in tree-planting exercises. Hon. Wepukhulu praised their dedication and enthusiasm, describing youth participation as a vital pillar in the fight against environmental degradation. He encouraged young Ugandans to continue taking leadership roles in conservation efforts and climate action initiatives.
The tree-planting activity symbolized more than environmental restoration; it reflected a collective commitment to building a healthier and greener nation. Each seedling planted represented hope, responsibility, and a long-term investment in Uganda’s environmental security and sustainable development aspirations.
Throughout the event, stakeholders reiterated the need to strengthen policies and programs that promote reforestation, climate resilience, and sustainable land management. The Commonwealth Forest Initiative was recognized as an important contribution toward achieving these goals while fostering partnerships that can accelerate environmental progress across the country.
After participating in the launch activities, Hon. Wepukhulu proceeded to Kololo Independence Grounds to attend the State of the Nation Address. His participation in both engagements highlighted the strong connection between environmental conservation and national development, reaffirming his commitment to supporting initiatives that protect Uganda’s natural heritage while advancing the country’s broader development agenda.
