NWSC Advances Katosi–Mutungo Water Project to Improve Supply in Kampala and Wakiso

Share This:

The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), working with the Government of Uganda, is advancing the Katosi–Mutungo Water Supply Improvement Project, which is expected to improve water supply reliability in several parts of Kampala and Wakiso District. The project aims to strengthen the existing distribution network and ensure better management of water demand across the affected areas.

Currently, the Mutungo service areas receive water through the Muyenga supply system. Under the new project, these areas will be transferred to the Katosi water supply system, reducing pressure on the Muyenga network and creating additional capacity to serve other customers more reliably.A major component of the project is the installation of approximately 3.8 kilometres of DN600 ductile iron pipeline running from Seeta to Namanve. This infrastructure will support the transfer of water demand from the Muyenga system to the Katosi system, improving the distribution of water across the connected networks.

According to the project details, approximately 708 cubic metres of water demand per hour will be transferred to the Katosi system once the project is completed. The change is expected to ease the burden on the Muyenga network, improve its operating capacity and contribute to more reliable water supply for customers in its service areas. The areas expected to benefit from the improved capacity include Rubaga, Lungujja, parts of Wakaliga Road, Busega, Natete, Ndebba, Mutundwe, Nalukolongo, Makindye, Salaama Road, Busabala, Mutesa I Road, Sentema Road, Rusaze, Mackay Road, Mbubi Road, Kamanya, Kitinzi, Kibumbiro, Albert Cook, Sekabakintu Road, Gumotoka and Kabuusu.Other areas expected to benefit include Bulenga, Buloba, Bulaga, Wotansimbi, Bukasa, Buyala, Kyebando, Gganda-Nasere, Kamu-Kamu, Bujjuko, Kawoko, Gombe-Kitasa, Naluvule, parts of Ssenge, Kabulengwa, Kireka-Biira, Nakabugo, Kigoma and Kayunga. For residents and businesses in these communities, improved water supply reliability is important for daily household activities, commercial operations and other essential services.

The additional capacity created within the Muyenga system is expected to support better distribution, although the actual level of improvement will depend on the completed infrastructure and its operation.Beyond improving supply in the affected neighbourhoods, the project is expected to increase flexibility in water distribution between the Katosi and Ggaba systems. This will give NWSC greater operational flexibility in managing demand and making use of the available water supply infrastructure.

The project comes as Kampala and surrounding communities continue to experience growth, increasing the need for dependable water services. Strengthening pipelines and connecting supply systems is one way of improving the network’s ability to respond to changing demand.NWSC and the Government of Uganda are working towards completing the Katosi–Mutungo Water Supply Improvement Project by November 2026. Once operational, the project is expected to strengthen water supply reliability and increase system capacity for customers in the targeted areas.
